80% of Fire Detection not fully operational

16 May 2012

Often staff adopt the attitude that it does not really matter if one or two smoke detectors within a building are not working.

Detecting smoke as quickly as early as possible should be the goal,it is largely the smoke that kills.

If the fire detection system is not working the smoke extraction and stairwell pressurisation systems will not receive the required activation signal. In our experience, 80% of fire detection systems are not fully operational.

The problem facing all management and maintenance staff is this: “how do you know that your fire life safety systems - which comprise smoke extraction, emergency power generators and as well as fire detection, suppression and evacuation systems - are fully operational, if you are not able to carry out time-consuming, regular physical checks?”

MeyCom has developed and recently launched Guardian (a cost effective monitoring solution), which uses web-technology operating over the  GSM cellphone networks to remotely  monitor and inform management, technical staff as well as service providers by Email and SMS when a fault or alarm has occurred in their fire life safety systems.

This effectively ensures that faults are reported as they occur.
